1. You knew and you didn’t say a word.

Dear Miss Granger,

I\'ve found out some disturbing news about you and your parents. I\'ve been looking for your parents for over sixteen years now, they were vanished all those years ago. That\'s what I thought anyway. But you see, Miss Granger, your lovely parents didn’t tell you that you weren\'t a filthy Mudblood after all. You are as pure as the Malfoy family.

Now, the real reason I\'m writing you this pleasant little note is because I\'ve finally tracked your parents down. They were once my favourites in my community, until they betrayed me and fled. I decided that they had to die as soon as possible.

So now the real reason. I\'m pleased to write that the moment you opened this letter, you killed your own parents. The letter was charmed with the deadly curse. I want to thank you very much for doing this small favour for me, Miss Granger.

As for you, Miss Granger, you\'ll be next, of course. I can\'t let you live with the knowledge that you are just like them!

Yours sincerely,

Lord Voldemort.

Hermione got the letter in the middle of her double Potions lesson. She had read the letter over and over again. \'It couldn\'t be, I couldn\'t have killed my parents by open a letter.\' she thought while reading it for the fifth time. Then an other owl flew in and dropped an envelop in her lap. It was a white one with a grey line around it.

Harry and Ron looked up from their cauldrons. They had seen the envelop but Ron didn\'t knew what it meant, only Muggles got those envelops when someone had died. Ron looked over to Harry and he explained what it was.

\"Miss Granger, I thought professor Dumbledore made clear that receiving mail during the lessons isn\'t allowed if it isn\'t a matter of life and death?\" Snape sneered at her but she didn\'t heard him. She knew Voldemort told the truth, her parents were dead.

\"Sir, the envelop Hermione has is a....\"

\"SILENCE!\" Snape yelled and strode over to the famous trio. \"I wish not to be interupted by you, Potter. Miss Granger, in my office.\" Snape turned around and walked to his office, his long black robes billowing behind him. Hermione didn\'t followed. She stood, yes, but ran the other way. She ran out the classroom slamming the door shut in her haste.Snape had heard it an strode back in the classroom again.

\"Miss Granger, come back in here A.S.A.P.!\" She didn\'t returned and Harry stood, holding the white envelop in his hand.

\"Sir?\" he said and reached out to hand Snape the letter. Snape seized it out of his hand and torn it open. He read and turned even paler that usual. He looked up started walking to the door.

\"Class dismissed. Go to your common rooms and stay there until next class is about to start. Potter, Weasley... go to the Headmaster and give him this letter. I have something to take care off...\" he finished and vanished through the same door Hermione went out. Harry and Ron grabbed their bags and ran out too.

\"What\'s wrong with the Mudblood? She looked as if her parents got killed by He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named.\" Luckily for Draco Malfoy no one of the Gryffindors had heard him, otherwise he would be history if they told Harry and Ron.

Hermione ran and ran until she was outside the castle. Tears were streaming down her sheeks.

\"They can\'t be dead because of me. I would never hurt them...\" she told herself and kept running for the gates. When she\'d reached the gates she stopped. \"I have to go home, to see for sure. They can\'t be...\"

\"Miss Granger! Wait. What are you doing? Come back this instand, we need to talk!\" It was Snape running down to the gates to bring Hermione back to the castle and to Dumbledore. Hermione turned around and saw him. She narrowed her eyes in anger.

\"IT\'S YOUR FAULT, YOU STUPID, GREASY, FILTHY BASTARD!\" Hermione yelled and apparated. She of age since early September age so she was allowed to apparate. Snape, however, didn\'t know she was. He ran to the point where he had last seen her and grabbed his wand from his robe pocket.

\"Sequi Hermione!\" he shouted and apparated after Hermione to where she was going.

Hermione apperated to her parental home. She stood in the backgarden and stormed to the door. It was locked and there was a ‘do not cross, crime scene’ note on the door. She grabbed her wand and opened the door. She stepped inside and saw that everything in the kitches was turned upside- down. She ran to the living room and found blood everywhere. Blood on the walls, the ceiling, on the floor and the furniture. Hermione stopped in the middle of the room and was pinned to the ground.

“MUM!” she screamed, but nobody answered of course. She found her knees going weak and dropped to the floor. She sobbed like she had never done before. She was broken, her whole life was over.

There was a soft snap in the backyard and Snape stood there now. He ran inside and found Hermione crying on the floor. He never really liked the young woman but now his heart broke at this sight. He kneeled down beside her and took her in his arm.

“Shhhhhh……” was all he could say before Hermione shot her head up and slammed him in his face.

“You k-knew! You knew it all… along and you d-didn’t said a…a word!” she snapped at him and got to her feet. Snape was in shock by the sudden punch in the face and lay flat on his back. “You knew my parents were wizards. You must have known as a Death Eater.”

“Former Death Eater, Miss Granger, former. And yes I knew, but only a few years. I didn’t knew at the time that your parents were who they….” Snape defended himself but it was no use, she stayed angry with him anyway.

“Why didn’t you tell me? My parents were in danger, I was in danger. I know I’m only a Gryffindor, but for Gods sake, I AM HUMAN TOO!” she shouted and ran to the stairs in the hallway.

She ran upstairs and left Snape there on the ground. There was blood on the stairs as well. She fell on the stairs there by seeing it.

“My God. What have they done…” Hermione said crying again. Snape got to his feet again and smoothed his robes before going after her. Hermione didn’t understand that it was her they wafteafter now and Snape had to protect her now. He had already discussed that with Dumbledore.

He found Hermione in her room, lying on her bed with her face in her pillow. Snape knocked on her door to enter but she didn’t responded.

“Miss Granger, please. Let me in, we need to talk.” He said trying to sound not as harch as usual and took a step inside the room.

“Get out, traitor! Don’t come near me.”she told him without facing him. Snape didn’t listen to her and stepped inside the room completely. He walked over to her bed and sat on the edge. Hermione felt his weight resting on her mattress but didn’t move.

“D’you have a hearing problem?” she said getting more angry by the minute.

“Do you?” he answered and looked at her back. He had to do something to comfer her, but what.

“Miss Granger… I’m sorry for your loss and I would have protected them if I could, but I couldn’t.” He hesitated for a moment and placed his hand on her trembling back. She didn’t shook him off, that was a good sign. “I’ve found out only a couple of years ago that I know your parents for ages, we were friends. Even before we joined the Dark Lord we were. But then they stepped out and we were ordered to kill them both. They fled, of course.” He had to tell her what was going on and why she was in danger too.

“Why did they step out?” came a muffled voice from the pillow. She still hadn’t turned to face Snape. It irritated him and he sighed.

“Miss Granger, could you turn around please? It doesn’t talk very comfertable this way.” His voice was velvetty and slick but there was no hate to detect in it. Hermione sighed and slowly turned around. Her eyes were all puffy and red and she still sobbed. Snape reached for her head and stroke her hair from her eyes. Hermione saw the pain in his eyes as well. ‘They must have been friends, otherwise he wouldn’t be here and show his emotions.’ Hermione thought as she looked him in his dark eyes.

“They joined the Dark Lord a few years before me. Tom had some problems with the Ministry of Magic and had to do some time in Azkaban.” Hermione’s eyes widened. “Do not worry, it was nothing big, but he thought it was. He went to a bar and got drunk. One of the Death Eaters heard him out and said he had the solution. He took your dad to the Lord and he would take care of things. Lord Volde… Voldemort did, but it was too late for your dad to go back home. Voldemort had your father in his power and he had to join or die. Your mother of course had to join as well, she did but with even more hesitation than your dad. When I… well, when I joined in we met again and became even better friends. We went on missions together when possible. Lucius Malfoy, Draco’s father, wasn’t pleased with that. Every time we got back he used to question us. We both hated to kill and rape, so we tried to avoid it as much as we could. By the…”

“What do you mean? My dad killed wizards and Muggles and raped women?” Hermione gasped and trears were forming in her eyes again. “No not my dad, he is a nice person.” Hermione started to cry again, which made Snape very uncomfortable. He softly caressed her shoulders and pulled her up into a hug. After a long hug he let go of her and continued.

“Are you holding up?” After Hermione had nodded a yes he wiped a tear from her cheek. He felt awful. How was he going to protect this young womam from the scum of the earth?

“As I were saying, we both hated it, and yes… your dad raped too. But after your mum got pregnant they stepped out. Voldemort saw that as the biggest crime you could commit, and ordered us to kill them. You must undestand, Miss Granger, they really did everything to protect you from being hurt by Voldemort.”

There was a long silence, the only audiable thing you heard were Hermione’s sobs. Again, Snape took Hermione in a caring hug and rocked back and forth with her in his arms. Hermione was so tired of all the happenings from that morning, that she fell asleep in his arms. Her breathing got back to normal and her sobs stopped.

After what felt like hours to Snape, she woke up. Snape looked down and smiled, her eyes were still dull from the mental pain.

“How are you feeling, Miss Granger?” he said and hugged her again. Hermione didn’t know what to think of her always nasty and cruel Potions professor. Was he playing a game with her or did he really had a consience and a warm character? She couldn’t decide that right away, as she thought about what Voldemort had written in the letter. She found the letter in her pocket and unfolded it. Snape saw the little Dark Mark in the upper corner andw whw who it was from.

“This is the letter I got in class this morning. It’s from Voldemort.” She gave it to him and he read it.

“Oh Miss Granger, I’m so sorry.” He said and he meant it.

“It’s my fault they’re dead, isn’t it? If I hadn’t open the damn envelope…”

“Don’t say that. Always remember that no matter what the Dark Lord or one of his followers does, it would never be your fault!” Snape snapped at her but didn’t mean to sound harsh. Hermione gave him a sad look and lowered her eyes.

“It still feels that way.” Snape took her head in his hands and bent down. He gave a soft kiss on her forehead. ‘What’s wong with me? Usually I can’t even look her in the eye and now I feel sorry for her loss. Even if they were my friends, she wasn’t!’ He took controll of himself and pulled back.

“Sorry, I … It won’t happen again.” He felt awful and wanted to go home, to his dark and cold dungeons to mourn. “I think we better get going. It’s too dangerous for you here. They are after you now, you know that. And if they catch me with you, I’m history too.” He said the last words in a sneering way, just like the real Severus Snape was. Hermione got angry with him again.

“Sure, don’t hurt the precious Potions Master. What would we do without him? I hope Voldemort will catch you, I still hate for not informing me about my roots. It’s your fault my parents are killed!” She tried to slap him again but now he was prepared. He grabbed her hand and grinned evilly.

“Don’t ever try that again, Miss Granger. You’ll be very sorry if you did!” He hissed and tightened his grip. “We’re leaving!”

With that said he pulled her off her bed and dragged her downstairs. As they passed the living room, they heard a cough.

“Ahem, Severus? Are you there?” It was the voice from Dumbledore. Snape stopped in his tracks, having Hermione bumping into his back. She struggled and tried to get away. He turned around and faced her.

“Be quiet for a moment and don’t leave without me. I don’t want to have to explain to the headmaster why you were found dead in a ditch in some wood.” He hissed and let go of her arm. He stepped inside the living room and saw Dumbledore’s head hanging in a fire.

“Good afternoon Severus, Miss Granger. How are you doing, my child?” professor Dumbledore asked Hermione who was in the living room now too.

“I’m okay, I guess. I just don’t understand why they have never told me what was happening…” Hermione felt tears coming and sat down quickly. Snape was his own nasty self again and didn’t comfort her.

“Ah yes, well uhhhm. Is it alright if we get back to Hogwarts now? I have loads of things to do and uhm… I’m hungry.” Snape said, regretting it the moment it slipped his mouth.

“Severus!” Dumbledore sounded really angry. “Show some respect to Miss Granger. She just lost her parents and if I’m not mistaken, they were very good friends of yours as well?” Dumbledore could not understand how Snape could still be so cruel. He was very disappointed in Severus at the moment. Snape sighed and nodded.

“You’re right Headmaster, I’m sorry.” Dumbledore looked puzzled at this. He then looked over to Hermione who was facing him.

“It’s alright, professor. I know he’s a bastard, I have known that for almost seven years.” She said and turned toward Snape. He got the message. She turned to professor Dumbledore again and tried to smile. “Can we come home? I don’t want to be here. I-I can can’t see this house anymore. Not after this.” She closed her eyes to hold back her tears. Breathing in and out as if she was meditating she calmed down again.

“I’m sorry Miss Granger, but no.” Hermione’s eyes shot open. “You can’t go back to Hogwarts for a while, it’s not safe for you here. Severus, you have to stay by her side for an unknown period of time. You can’t stay in the house either.” Dumbldore ended the sentence and looked inside the fire. “Minerva? Ah here you are….”

“What the hell is going on? I can’t go back, I have to stay somewhere….with you? No way!” Hermione shot at Snape who was just as annoyed by that fact as she was.

“Do you honestly believe, Miss Granger, that I’m pleased with it? I’ll ask if Lupin will be your bodygaurd and risk his life to protect you, because I won’t!” He really didn’t want to risk his life for a silly little twit. After all these years he’d known her, she was still a silly little know-it-all, but with a great figure now. What was he thinking now?

“Severus? Are you still there, ah yes. I talked to Minerva about it and she also thinks it’s best for Miss Granger that she will be protected by you.” The Headmaster looked very serious as if he knew what was going to happen next.

“Surely Albus, I really don’t think that I should be the one protecting her.” Snape bent forward to the fire and looked around for a moment. “I can’t stand the little twit. And… I know she thinks the same way about me…”

“I do!” said Hermione who had heard every word. “I can even say that I hate you…. Traitor..” Hermione said under her breath and sat down on the couch again.

“Severus, could I have a moment with Miss Granger alone, please?”

“Of course.” Severus said and backed out of the living room. He only narrowed his eyes when passing Hermione.

“Miss Granger. Come over here please, I don’t feel like shouting.” Professor Dumbledore , hi, his eyes bright and clear. Hermione got on her knees in front of the hearth. Her eyes were still puffy and with a sniffing nose she faced the Headmaster.

“Yes, sir?”

“I think it’s time for you and Professor Snape to make a truce, don’t you think?” He said and pulled his beard. Hermione couldn’t believe her ears, she and Snape having a truce?

“I don’t think we can, sir. Too much has happened. Because of him being a Death Eater, my parents are dead. He didn’t warn me!”

“Miss Granger, I think you know why he couldn’t tell you. He visited me the other night and told me what Tom was planning. He couldn’t inform you, it would’ve meant his death.” Dumbledore pointed out sadly.

“So be it then. Now my parents are dead and he’s still walking around here playing the following Death Eater for that prick.”

“Miss Granger, please. If he indeed had told you what Lucius was planning for your parents and you would have been here as they came, you would be dead too. And so would professor Snape. He couldn’t tell you because he’s your guard, your parents knew that.” The headmaster looked into the fire again and Hermione heard her head of house whispering. Finally after a minute or so he turned back and looked at Hermione again.

“Sir, I won’t stay here or anywhere with that man, period!” she said straight away.

“I’m sorry, Miss Granger. You don’t have a choice this time. I think it would be wise to uss uss your vacation address with professor Snape. No one knows you were staying there over summer.” The headmaster tried to smile but failed. “I’ll contact you as soon as I can. Keep your head cool, Miss Granger.”

“But…”

With a flash of fire and smoke the headmasters head was gone.

Snape didn’t return to the livingroom. Instead he sat in the kitchen, waiting for Hermione to come to him. He really hoped she wouldn’t, he was furious with her.

“Little brat. How dare she saying that to me.” He mocked and looked out of the window. He didn’t heard Hermione walking in.

“There’s absolutely no point talking with that man once he’s made up his mind.” Hermione said and sat down. Snape looked up.

“Were you talking to me?” he sneered.

“As a matter of fact I was, yes. We have to talk about our stay in… Spain.”
