okay i'm sure you've received mail on this already but here's my two cents anyway: there's really not that big of a difference between self-harm and masochism. the only difference is in the ideas and pre-existing misconceptions others have about it. the only real 'defining' difference is in how people typically associate them. self harm is usually associated w/ someone who is trying to relive their negative feelings through physical pain, where-as masochist is someone stimulating their positive sense of self and, in this case, pleasure-feeling nerves, through physical pain. ultimately they come down to the same image, and the boundary definitely overlaps here. you've got harry, who happens to be on a self-harm kick because his masochistic needs aren't being met - it's actually not uncommon and NOT unheard of. the way you have it going is just fine. any one can fall into a bad cycle, but for masochists, they need a dominant to guide them through what is okay/pleasurable pain, and what is actually harmful pain. if they don't have this guide in their life, then just like anyone else who gets into that bad rut, they could end up doing permanent and deadly harm to themselves.
