I liked this one. It reminds me of a scene in the movie version of The Mists of Avalon.

Also, I don't know if you meant this to correspond with the equinox that just passed or not, but Beltane is actually on May 1. At any rate, it's still a seasonally appropriate story as spring is here (at last!) in the northern hemisphere.

Now, how about you continue this? I know you wanted it to be a oneshot, but come on, with that last sentence, it's a wonderful line to continue the story on...

And, though it's offtopic, have you read the Avalon trilogy by Marion Zimmer-Bradley? She describes a Beltane ritual not unlike the one you have created here. Great research, I am extremely impressed. And if you don't know the Avalon stories, I'd definitely suggest you read those!
