I'm just re-reading this, as I do two or three times a year. Still loving it but that fifty-mile radius thing still bugs me. A circle of fifty mile radius is a hundred miles across, but the north of Scotland is only fifty-five miles across so if that's where Hogwarts is, nearly half that circle would have to be over the ocean.
If you place Hogwarts slap bang in the centre of the Cairngorms you can just about fit in a hundred mile circle and have it all or nearly all on land - but it would basically incorporate the whole of the central bulge of Scotland. It really seems like overkill for them to set the circle that wide: ten miles would be a lot more credible.
