Good chapter, with one slight concern. The story of "The Gift of the Magi" works very well, except that it is such a very American story, by the *very* American author, O. Henry. I can easily imagine Hermione having read it, given that it was written close to the start of the 20th century, but it seems less likely that she'd expect Snape to find out about the story without a visit to a muggle library (or internet access).

Very nicely done Hermoine. That was such a smart thing to do and I knew Harry was staying away because Severus told him so. I love how Hermoine knows how Severus will react, it amuses me

theseachange: Re: Finding the story (Gifts of the Magi) - I've thought about sending Snape to a Muggle library (and for all I knew, Hermione might have expected him to go to one); but decided to take it easy on him and let him get lucky in a book shop. After all, many book shops already have internet connections, even if the shop owner didn't know the story, she could have googled it. I find it a little less likely that she'd have the book so conveniently HANDY to be purchased but, I figure, a smart shop owner might have ordered a couple of copies of the story just for Christmas. Oh well, now Hermione has the book she'd already read, and Severus is going to annoy Harry at work : )

At last, a chapter with some hope. Harry may have meant well indeed, believing his presence was a blight upon the land to Snape, and given what happened, it's a very reasonable supposition. But Harry is not the sort to do any research on slave bonds, nor would he be especially inclined to listen to Hermione on them as long as Snape stayed away.
Yet...Harry owes Severus any heart's-ease that Snape wants. Slavery changes the master as well as the slave, and I suspect there may be a dank feeling of reciprocity owed that's been bothering him, too--but given Snape's silence (and near-death from that silence), I'm sure he didn't want to presume. Not after how much he, and Tom _did_ presume, after all.
Looking forward to move. Oh, and I adore Hugo!

Oh my that was just sad. Severus is just torturing himself over this and why hasnt Harry come for him. Is he respecting Severus's wishes that they remain apart. I loved how you wrote this, I just feel the emotion here
