Realistically awkward, a tad upsetting, and yes, plenty of sympathy for a young Mr. Snape being led by his one-eye snake by a rather scheming lioness. That does not mean I want Hermione to go easy on him! Not yet anyway ;)

Ooh, I like the AU thing with Lily... it sounds totally plausible. And it's good that Snape is starting to realize that Hermione is important and wonderful and not too annoyingly Gryffindorish hehe.
It would be awesome if he got a taste of jealousy though... maybe later on? I do like me some good old jealousy.
