This was exceptionally heart-wrenching and breathtaking. My emotions were gripped the whole time. It pained me watching Harry fail at finding anything documenting the awesome things Severus did or any mature image of him. I can imagine why Severus wouldn't want his image taken for multiple reasons; I doubt he even had a mirror. The small explanation differentiating portraits from horcruxes (such as Riddle's Diary) was very well done -and something I've felt sorely lacking in the original books.
I love the idea that Lily was always in love with Severus but was able to grow to love James. I've always been torn between wanting to feel sympathy for him and wanting to swat him upside the back of the head for DOING IT TO HIMSELF by calling Lily that loathsome word.
That Alice Longbottom was their generation's Collin Creevy was such an interesting touch.
You did such a wonderful job writing this extrapolation to fit into what is written in the books. I'm honestly tempted to mentally snuggle this story into my view on the whole "Harry Potter" story. :headtilts: Would you mind?
Thank you so, so much for writing. It was brilliant. Absolutely beautiful.

I really enjoyed that - especially your take on the actual magics involved in portrait-making. fascinating.
of course, the thought that now lily and severus will aways be hiding in some portrait snogging makes me giggle.
thanks for this :)

It's a lovely story and it's one of the endings I would have found acceptable for the Harry Potter series. Rowling showed him and his fans no respect at all, what she wrote about his meeting with Voldemort in the Shreiking Shack was written for expediency's sake. At least in her rush to be rid of him she left us lots of loopholes and my first choice is that there was no portrait because there was no body, and there was no body because he survived Nagini's bite. A man with his intelligence and his experience with Voldemort as Dumbledore's spy would have kept a phial of the antivenin to Nagini's venom concealed somewhere on himself at all times where he was in the presence of Voldemort. He knew exactly what Voldemort was capable of and he would have prepared himself for such a contingency and would have had a place to go after Voldemort's defeat to continue on with his life.
I think he poured the antivenin down his throat while Harry was trying to ove the crate. He escaped from the Shreiking Shack once the antivenin took full effect and he had regained consciousness. By then the battle was over and the people who opposed Voldemort were celebrating their victory for a bit before they started collecting their dead for burial. During that time he slipped away and started a new life somewhere away from Hogwarts and the wizarding world in Britain.
Your premise is one of the few other ends for him that I find acceptable because it shows respect for him and for his fans.
Rowling doesn't seem to comprehend all that she has written. We've been reading what her subconscious mind has written and knew all along that Snape was good and was a hero, while her conscious mind only seems to be aware of the unpleasant cover she created for him so that he could succeed as a spy. She has yet to realize that in Severus Snape she has created the most outstanding hero in literature since Jane Austen created Mr. Darcy. I've said it before and I'll say here again, her ego doesn't comprehend her id so she doesn't realize that she has created a classic character in Snape that is worthy of Dickens and Jane Austen. He is the reason adults became hooked on the Potter books.
Snape and Neville are the only two characters I can connect with on a non fairy tale basis. She liked Neville (I think we all have a soft spot for him) so she gave him a fitting place in the battle, without him victory wouldn't have been possible because he destroyed the last known Horcrux. Snape should have been given a similar spotlight in DH to show where his loyalties lay.
For me Snape Lives!

SO much better than what Rowling did to him! Whew, thank you... now I don't have to toss Deathly Hallows out like so much garbage.

Hey I really enjoyed that! Feel like you got a good, realistic feel of Lily/Severus relationship. I felt also there was more than what was put in the book...that it was a mutual love affair...great fic!

Yes! Damn right that's how it *should* have ended. And that's how the whole thing should have been written too - with elegance, insight, compassion and beautiful style.
I absolutely loved this, and as well as the obvious proper send-off for Snape, there were so many nice touches (ginger newts, Flitwick's wand practice).
I think I'll have to reread this again later. Fantastic work; thanks for posting.

This was an enjoyable read to say the least! I liked Harry struggling and being repentant. Now what dragons will he find to fight? I think leaving 18 year old Snape and 18 year old Lily together is good karma. At least in this one small way they can be together. Its all so damn heartbreaking!! I need warm and happy fluff. I need to reply eye make up. Thank you for the story!
ps: Why did you list it as SS/OFC? All the characters are canon, unless I am missing something?
