I liked the second half though when he was trying to apologise; and I especially loved Hermione's gesture of giving him back his fortune.

oh i Am more bloodthirsty than Hermione, but i think her retribution in this chapter was wonderful and in line with the way you are telling your story.

I love the fact that she was able to show him a thing or two. and the little discussion after fear, was wonderful. an ounce of understanding from Lucius is worth a hundred times more that repentance taken out of his flesh. repentance wold be out of charter, however the little bit of self awareness gained by their discussion shows a deeper sense of his humanity.
Lucius knows he has a personal power about himself, but we can see he has some doubts about him self in his constant battle with his delicate ego. his surprise at scaring Hermione is testament to the fact that he can underestimate himself, especially when it comes to the connection he is developing with his wife.... this story is wonderful!

I'm a bit more bloodthirsty than Hermione, but he did understand what he did to her was wrong and he did promise not to do it again. For Lucius, that was a big step.
