For me, love and relationships, marriages for love solely are not at all about children. They are about the love two people feel for each other and the desire to be together.
BUT bondings, or matings, and arranged marriages are about children. I've always gotten the feeling from creature fics that Nature, or the powers that be, are the ones that in the end create these bonds. And for Nature the purpose is always to continue the line. Maybe I'm just a bit too deep in my science, but mating is all about working to combine the best possible genes so the next generation will be strong. And Arranged Marriages, of course, are for the continuation and bettering of the family line. Meaning, again, children. Nature is not going to create matches that are detrimental to the species.
I think if you just discuss the issues of love, then children are absolutely unnecessary. But when start bringing creature mating and bondings (or arranged marriages) into the equation, that kind of throws all of that out the window. Personally, I've always felt if an author is going to bring one of those into the story, but they don't want to write and mpreg, it's always better to leave it out of the equation instead of making it a point to say it's impossible.
