I have enjpyed reading this story and found the dynamic between the characters interesting. I did wonder - and continue to - why Severus wasn\'t more clear and factual in his warning to Albus regarding Julian. The facts you introduced later made it clear that he could have been. However, it was somewhat like wondering why characters in horror movies don\'t move into the nearest house of worship for the duration. You accept it and just enjoy the movie. And I did. But I found it interesting and disturbing reading this chapter, especially in light of your warnings. I think there is a great difference between a fluffy bunny and deliberate murder if a family member, who is a boy, who is helpless. That Severus could eliminate the grown threat of his brother who was actively trying to kill him is terrible but understandable. The other is murder and there is no way to pretty that up or justify it in any other way. At least not if someone is honest, and Snape has become a man who is painfully honest with himself and others. There is no way in which there couldn\'t have been some attempt made to \'reform\' the boy from taking him to Albus to taking him to Saint Mungos to making him squib to obliviating him that oculdn\'t have been tried. If indeed that was neccessary. I agree with the reviewer who pointed out that Severus didn\'t know him, and neither did we really. Did I miss some act of heinous cruelty on the Hamish\'s part? But, in the immediate Severus could have body binded him and knocked him out. So, it couldn\'t even be said to be the heat of the moment. I have enjoyed your story and understand the death of Julian and the more ruthless aspects of Severus\' characters. But there was no logical reason to explain this action and that doesn\'t serve the story. Instead, it begs the question of why I should care whether someone who is willing to murder his nephew should live or die? And to feel absolutely no remorse - well basically that makes his actions psychopathic or a sociopathic unless you are saying the feeling will kick in later when he has time to deal with it. And do I know what I am talking about? Yes, I was a soldier who is now a psychologist. I was never in combat myself, but I served with Vietnam vets and men and women who are currently cops and federal agents. And to a person, when they have spoken of killing, even the enemy, they have said that it stays with you and even when you know it\'s you or the person on the other end of the gun pointed at you, that there is guilt. The difference is that in combat or in police work, it is the job you must do and so there is the reality of that purpose. Although, self-defense and self preservation also act as buffers. There is also hatred, if you can convince yourself that you hate your antagonist then you are less likely to feel guilt. But hatred takes time to grow and you must make the decision that the other person has less right to live than you do.
