I LOVE Hermione\'s attitude & comparing herself with Severus!!! I really want to know exactly what the figures show.... which area is the most grim (guessing it\'s the purebloods) & what will it take to get the #\'s back up? Also am wondering how Hermione is going to deal with her prenancy & Draco? She will have to face him sooner or later & the child will be his sibling so I would guess he would want to have some involvement? Will be watching for chapter 21!!! Deb >^..^<

ok...Im not even gonna pretend that I understood about half of what you wrote in that last chapter, but I will go along with it. It sounded good, even to my ignorant ears.

Keep going

Another perfect chapter m\'dear...I am most intrigued as to what the implicatons are as to the conclusions Hermione has drawn...Shan\'t say much else....Am afraid that sarcasm has deserted me and I am at a loss as to what to say...

Ohhh...I know...As a survivor many times over of forced relatons, I must sooth any trepidation you may feel when dealing with Hermione\'s situation by telling you that I most certainly do not find your expression of this topic in anyway offensive. I also find Hermione\'s reactions realistic, however, those of us who have survived have dealt with our lot our own ways, so really any emotion or thought process you bestow her with, as long as it can be justified (something you have been doing well), is not wrong or offensive...

Looking forward to the next..

i\'m always intrigued when muggle science and magic mix, so i loved this chapter. the only confusion i have (and thank you for the \"genetics for idiots and/or humanities students\" primer) related to the exchange regarding mutants and hermione\'s admonishment to severus that his unspoken comment was \"too low, even for (him)\". what did i not catch? i\'m sure i was just reading too quickly to pick it up...

What can I say, I just can\'t resist the impulse to leave technical feedback. I have an excuse this time, though. Namely, I\'m a geneticist. So, if you have any questions on the vocabulary or mechanisms, email me at rec3 at duke.edu. I liked Hermione\'s explanation arinaring genetics to potions-making. However, I think you meant to say that the trait is X-linked *recessive*. X-linked recessive traits show up very rarely in women because women have to have it on both X chromosomes. If they\'ve only got it on one, the dominant gene on the other will win out. Whereas men, only having one X chromosome, don\'t have that happen. An X-linked dominant trait would be expected to show up more in women than in men.

The other possible explanation for a trait that mostly affects men is that it\'s sex-influenced, rather than sex-linked. For instance, male pattern baldness is not carried on the sex chromosomes, which means that women have the same chance of inheriting the genes for it that men do. Perhaps you\'ve noticed the scarcity of women with male pattern baldness? That\'s because, while the genes may be present, they\'re triggered by testosterone (which, incidentally, is the reason eunuchs don\'t go bald).

As for Y-linked traits -- it\'s highly unlikely. The Y chromosome is tiny, and probably doesn\'t contain much of anything beyond the set of genes that cause, well, maleness. (Humans, like most mammals, \"default\" to female in the absence of other instructions. Some years ago there was a case of a woman runner being barred from competition because, to her complete shock, a genetic workup had shown that she was XY rather than XX. Surprised the hell out of her, her parents, her doctor... but the \"instructions\" had essentially never been received, so she turned out to be a girl. Jamie Lee Curtis is, I believe, also XY.)

So, if I can bore you with any more trivia, let me know!

That was really informative & quite interesting!!! The more they are finding out, the more they need to know. I am really curious to see how this \"working\" relationship between Severus & Hermione progresses?!? This could get REALLY interesting as well!!! Will be watching for your next update*

Having studied both Anthropology and genetics, I am very much amused by the likeliness of your theory. Women tra traditionaly been considered the magical ones in most ancient cultures. The division of male\'s magic, which normally consists of hunting magic and the life magic of women, gathering, growing and giving birth predates the very recent male domination of religion. (Not to get feminist on you or anything) Anyway, the point is, the female passing down the \"magic\" gene is not unbelieveable.

In the meantime, poor \'Mione. It just makes you want to cuff Poppy.

I\'m dying to find out what her findings are. Apparently I\'m a bit too dense to figure it out on my own. I love the Ron and Draco stuff as well. I don\'t think I\'ve ever seen Ron written so likeably (is that a word?).
